Lancia Thema 8.32 GoodYear Eagle
Re: Lancia Thema 8.32 GoodYear Eagle

Re: Lancia Thema 8.32 GoodYear Eagle
Van de week plaatste iemand op FB (https://www.facebook.com/groups/54027807052/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) de volgende foto. Niet heel bijzonder zou je zeggen. Er stond verder ook geen commentaar bij. En de foto kreeg ook weinig ‘likes’. Mijn zesde zintuig zei dat er meer schuil ging achter deze foto. Dus via Google even een “reverse image lookup” gedaan. Een beproefde methode waarmee ik wel vaker op interessante websites terecht ben gekomen. Zo ook deze keer. De zoekopdracht leverde slechts een return op: http://www.paologarella.com/life.php?id=27" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Dear Erwin,
yes i am the driver on the picture.
At that time I was working in the "Vehicle Manufacturing Liaison Engineering” team at the Goodyer Tech Center in Luxemburg, responsible for the italian accounts, so I tested all the cars that were developed in Italy from 1985 to 1990.
one of the most interesting projects has been the Lancia thema Ferrari 8.32.
the test driver that develop the car in lancia was Mr Cavallero, a great test driver and developer with huge experience. Lancia developed together the 8.32 and the Delta 4WD.
At the prototype phase the car was great. fantastic to drive with a superb handling and good comfort. Lancia decided to have only the Eagle tire on the car because at that time Goodyear was suppling F1 and was the most important supplier of FERRARI.
Unfortunately due to a series of budget cut the car that went in production was much worst then the prototypes. To keep as much as possible of parts from the standard Thema a lot of modification were not implemented. The tires were marked 205 but in reality were 185 because FIAT did not want to change a bolt in the rear trailing arm.
Also the original plan to have a specific Atelier to built the cars was lost and the quality control was not at the level that the project would required.
The picture in my website is of a production car that we rented in Belgium. The car had a terrible handling and was full of squeak and rattle. When I reported this to Mr Cavallero he was really embarrassed but he admitted that the production was far from where it should have been.
If I remember correctly Lancia made a second series and they wanted to make important changes with wider tires (I tested in Italy a prototype with Michelin tires 225) but I do not remember if and what went in production.
I am very happy that you are keeping data of that project and I am sorry not to have more to share.
Keep follow my projects on Facebook and on my website!
it is important to us!
Best regards,
Paolo

The tires were marked 205 but in reality were 185 because FIAT did not want to change a bolt in the rear trailing arm.
Zou een "a production car that we rented in Belgium" de beste indruk geven qua kwaliteitsbeleving vraag ik me af?

Caravello gebleven?
Re: Lancia Thema 8.32 GoodYear Eagle
1. I have no info on Mr Cavallero. I saw him last time more then 15 years ago.
2. I do not remember about the mod’s, probably different stiffness in the suspension bushing and some mods in the suspension arm to allow different tires
3. Tires, this was very common in the past. OEM would ask very specific tire development for their cars. the tire that you buy in the market have very little to do with the original equipment tire that you get when a car is new. This is a very well kept secret and most of the owner do not have a clue of the difference. Lancia at the time asked to Goodyear to mark the tire with 205 even if the REAL size was much closer to 185. there is nothing strange or illegal about the request also because the ETRTO standard that specify the tire tolerances for a given size, is very flexible and allows big margins. More, being GOODYEAR the only supplier at that time, the assumption was that who would change tires would buy again GOODYEAR and they should not have problem with interference.
It is also true that normally tire testing is done in much more severe condition then normal user would experience, so probably very few people in the time could experience problem with other tires.
