8.32 Electrical issues

Bericht door CharlieA » 09 mei 2015, 22:09

Hello!

My name is Jarle, I come from Norway.
Just recently I bought a 8.32 with a plan to do some work on it this summer.
It's really quite good, but has some electrical issues and some small rust issues.

When I bought it, most of the electricals worked, apart from the rear spoiler.

Now after standing still for some weeks, with a flat battery some other electrical problems surfaces.

1. No lights on the car any more
2. Does not seem to charge
3. ABS light stays lit
4. The spoiler never did raise

I've found an electrical diagram, that should be helpfull.

I'm thinking perhaps the 4 problems are related.
Often the Alternator needs a 12v signal to charge.
Where is the relay for the lights and ABS?

Hoping start working on the 8.32 ASAP, but I have a QP3 which is first in line.

Hope someone has some good tips on where to start searching, thanks!

First of all, congrats! It's a great car!

I could sum up lots of ideas for your problems. But, as you mentioned, you should first have a good charged battery with a good charging alternator. In the 8.32 there's a check in the alternator which will turn off the alternator charging warning after the car has been started. Without enough power in the battry all kinds of lights can turn on. I have the same. I have an oil warning when I try to fire it up with a battery without enough power. After charging this warning disappears.

It seems though that the problems can not be related. The headlights don't have a relay sadly. That's why you should not start with the lights on. Many problems are related to bad mass connections below the headlights on both sides. You should thouroughly clean them and reconnect. Spraying with contactcleaner is not sufficient.

Welcome Jarle! A 8.32 and a QP3, how nice. Do you have any pictures of your car? Is it a series 1 or 2?

For now I can only advice the first guidance provided by MJ.

Good luck!

Thanks, really looking forward to working on it. It's a great car to drive, I must say.
And I also love the understated looks of it.

I am suspecting the battery is damaged. That could cause some problems if that is the case.
I will have it checked out.

Ok, so below the headlights, there are a collection of cables going to Earth?
Will loosen them, sand them, clean and reconnect.

We'll se what happens after I've done these two.

This is a 1991 car, so should be the last series? Will take a photo tonight and post here.

QP3 is a Maserati Quattroporte series 3. Made from 1979 to 1990.

It's roughly beneeth the headlights but you can get acces to these points from within the engine compartment.

When you go to: "Naslagwerken" you will find all the manuals available for downloading!

Jarle,

To clear up a minor detail about the ABS light:

The ABS light switches off when the alternator is charging correctly. (and if ABS is working properly)

The Alternator does not charge while using the starter, only when you stop using the starter and the engine fires up, does the alternator start charging , this way the engine is not slowed down during starting by a dragging alternator, it is controlled by an extra terminal on the starter.
The exitation wire on the alternator is not a normal 12 Volt connection but comes from the control panel. The controlpanel also tests the battery condition.

The charging cycle used by the alternator depends on the battery state. Which explains Maarten Jan's experience with lights flickering etc.

The ground wire connections between the engine (transmission) and the body should also be spotless clean. Minor voltage drops can confuse the computer.

Good luck

Been a bit busy, so haven't had the time to do much.
But last week, bought a new battery, and all issues where gone.
Lights work, warning lamps off everything works like a charm.

That is apart from the spoiler. Details on this circuit would be nice.
One of the headrests goes up and down, the other does not. Details on this circuit as well would be nice.

Looking forward to getting it registered!

Thanks for your help this far!
