There is nothing wrong with an extra earth cable from the engine to the battery or chassis.
The original cable is going from the battery to the chassis and than to 1 of the bolts from the gearbox, just follow it from the battery terminal down to the gearbox and you'll find it. You might have to check and clean that one as well.
Your starter motor is connected to the engine. You have a red plus wire from your battery towards the starter motor, the starter motor is attached to the engine so the engine has to have a cable back to the minus terminal of the battery to have a circuit through which the current can pass. That's the cable from the gearbox to your battery, if the connection is dirty, Resistance is high so current can not pass easily and engine will not turn over or turn over very slow.

Big chance that your alternator is also charging with the cable connected. And if not than your voltage-regulator died because of the bad earth connection.
